Election watchdog seeks digitally savvy specialists to zero in on threats

Election watchdog seeks digitally savvy specialists to zero in on threatsCanada's election watchdog is seeking three specialists to analyze social media for threats to the integrity of the next federal election, a move that follows troublesome evidence of online Russian interference in the 2016 U.S. presidential vote. In a recruitment notice issued Monday, the Commissioner of Canada Elections says the specialists will collect and methodically scrutinize content from social media, blogs, chat rooms, message boards, and video and image-sharing websites. The commissioner's office is responsible for ensuring compliance with the Canada Elections Act and will be especially mindful of attempts to use "fake news" and disinformation to sway voters in the run-up to the 2019 general election.

Premier Doug Ford and his Progressive Conservatives introduced legislation this summer to slash the city's 47-seat council nearly in half, triggering a complex legal challenge from the city.

Stage set for showdown in New Brunswick's closely divided legislatureThe New Brunswick legislature opens Tuesday with the election of a Speaker and a throne speech, but the Tories say the Liberals' days are numbered. Premier Brian Gallant says his minority Liberal government has listened to the message sent by voters in last month's election and will present a throne speech that incorporates many of the opposition parties' campaign pledges. The Liberals won just 21 seats — one fewer than the Liberals, while the Green and People's Alliance parties each won three.
